The Meaning of Islam

The Meaning of Islam

Islam means peace and submission to the will of God. It is the religion which has revealed to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The religion of Islam is the religion of God. Since God sent the message to mankind to guide them to the right way and to enable to follow his teaching. It is the religion of all the prophets who came before Muhammad, but the last and the comprehensive message which has been given to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the universal religion for mankind.

This will reveal to us the relationship between Islam and the revealed religions all of them came from God, but the previous ones were limited for a certain period and to certain nations.

The true muslim firmly believe in all the prophets whose names are mentioned in the holy Qur'an and he also believes in the revelation which came to them without any doubt and he believes in the creation of angels and also in the Day of judgment.

Islam was explained by the prophet Muhammad himself when he was asked by the Angel Gabriel, is front of his companions, about Islam, Iman (faith) and Ihsan (the perfection of belief). the question and answers took place in the following way : Gabriel came to the prophet and said: ''Oh Muhammad, tell me, what is Islam?'' The prophet Answered: "Islam is to bear withes that there is no other deity but Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger. To keep up regular prayer, to fast one month in the year which is Ramadan, and to pay zakat and to visit Mecca once in a lifetime for pilgrimage. "then Gabriel asked" What is Iman, which means faith ? " the prophet answered "belief in God, in his angels, in his prophets and in His holy books, the scripture, and to believe in the day of judgment and to believe that destiny is from God, its sweetness and bitterness as well as its goodness and badness is from God. "then Gabriel asked the third question, "What is Ihsan? the perfection of belief? " The prophet answered " to worship God as if you see him. If you don't see him indeed he is seeing you".

One can conclude from these questions and answers that there are three stages of practicing Islam. the first the out word stage, expressed by pronouncing the Article of faith, prayer, fasting, Zakat and performing the pilgrimage. The second stage is the inner one, which is expressed in the action of the heart, belief is God his angels, his prophets and his revelation and belief in the Day of judgment. The third stage represent to us the highest standard of belief in Islam. what we could call the perfection of belief for those who worship God as if they see him or are at least sure that he is seeing them.

Islam is worship and work, behaviour and character, belief and law, not worship only as some people understand meaning of religion, It is a complete way of life, because the real Muslim is controlled by Islam in all his life deeds, sayings treatment, behaviour abd work as well as a kind of worship. Islam considers work done is a good mannar as a kind of worship and a Muslim will be rewarded for this.

Islam considers also all human beings as one family. all of them are equal. there is no reason for a nation to be above another, or those of white colour ro feel they are above black or coloured people. these are artificial differences between human beings because all of them come from one make and female. They are all children of Adam; and Adam was created from dust. A human being needs to have a clean heart and to do good towards other human beings. for Islam to consider him a good muslim (or to be in a state of grace). these principles are taken from the verse of Holy Qur'an : " Mankind we have created you from a single cell, from a single pair of make and female and made you into nations and tribes that you may know each other. Ch.49, verse13.
